It’s Autumn!

The garden in September, October and November

As the air cools and the day length shortens, our gardens change from the colourful bonanza of Summer, to the mellow, earthy tones of Autumn. Architectural seedheads, rich berries and the occasional dash of colour from an autumn crocus are the order of the day. And throughout September, October and November, the leaves of our deciduous trees gradually change from vibrant greens to golds, chocolates and reds, before they are finally blown to the earth in the Autumn gales. We make the most of days when the weather is settled. We tend the flower beds, clearing away dead stems, barrowing compost and planting bulbs for next Spring. And when the weather is wild, we take refuge in the potting shed, sowing seeds for next year.

As the garden changes, so our floral displays do too. Of course, we don’t have many long-stemmed flowers later in the year, so we turn our attention away from the bunches and bouquets of the summer months. Instead, the ingredients from the autumn garden are perfect for making fabulous Autumn door wreaths, full of texture and earthy colours - a true reflection of the Scottish garden.

Take a look at our door wreaths or come and make one for yourself at a workshop, held here at The Moorhouse.
